Imagine being falsely accused of pushing your husband out a window, a man with extremely bad taste in music. Now imagine you did kill him. These two truths coexist in French director Justine Triet's sour whodunnit Anatomy of a Fall.
Sandra Hüller is smart and sneaky as Sandra, a writer living unhappily in France with her family. One morning, she finds herself a suspect in her spouse’s murder case. Did she do it? Yes? No? Triet isn't interested in easy answers. Justice is imperfect. The innocent suffer all the time. The guilty go free. Maybe she’s guilty? Maybe?
The movie is more than just an uneasy mystery. It's a whirlwind courtroom drama and a vivid snapshot of a marriage falling apart. The cast is full of quirky character actors, especially Milo Machado-Graner, as Sandra's visually impaired 11-year-old son, tortured and suspicious. Hüller's Sandra is unlikable, but is that a crime?
