Mr. and Mrs. Bond. James Bond. Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender are married MI6 agents in Steven Soderbergh's cooly directed spy-versus-spy thriller Black Bag. They are impossibly chic, elegant, and faithful. Or are they? Fassbender's George is tipped off that his wife, Kathryn, may be a traitor.
She's not the only turncoat; four others are suspected of stealing a secret computer code. So George invites everyone for dinner. Games are played! Yes, this is a chilly espionage whodunit, but it's also a romance. Fassbender is a stylish patriot stalking his wife, and Blanchett is captivating as the best of the best. All spouses keep secrets from one another, but it's doubly so when both work for the same intelligence agency.
Soderbergh is a true master of his craft in Black Bag, backed up by David Kepp's twisty screenplay. His movies of late have been modestly budgeted, resolutely grown-up, and entertaining.
