Trigger warning: dental horror. Bring Her Back is YouTube creators-turned-filmmakers Danny and Michael Philippou's follow-up to their shocking debut Talk To Me. Like that movie, Bring Her Back starts slowly, then builds to a chaotic climax. But the Philippou's fail to summon an original nightmare. This is a cult movie, and a lackluster one.
Bring Her Back is saved by an unhinged performance by Sally Hawkins as a foster parent with zero chill and even fewer boundaries. Hawkins' mom opens her house to a pair of siblings who lost their father: visually impaired Piper, played by Sora Wong in a fantastic debut, and Billy Barratt as her older step-brother, Andy. Little do these two know, but Hawkin's do-gooder has been dabbling with black magic thanks to a VHS tape from Hell's Blockbuster. Jonah Wren Phillips stands out as an innocent young boy possessed by a demon who is into self-harm.
On my Must Watch list.
