Marvel Studio's latest chapter in its flagging superhero saga is the story of a nice, hardworking guy living in a miserable reality crowded with moody gods constantly destroying the world.
In Captain America: Brave New World, likable Anthony Mackie, ever the rising star, steps away from his role as wise-cracking sidekick Falcon and picks up the First Avenger's indestructible, physics-defying shield-frisbee. He's finally the lead in an MCU adventure, and he deserves it. Unfortunately, it's a bore, visually flat and strangled by interminable exposition. CA: BNW is also a lukewarm potluck dinner of references to forgotten Marvel flicks, like the underrated Eternals.
Harrison Ford can't help but growl words like "adamantium" with contempt as the President. I'd pay for BTS clips of Ford raging as ‘Red Hulk’ in front of a green screen. My biggest gripe? Mackie's suit isn't cool, and his cyborg wings make no sense. Are they magic?
It's much as I feared. Still holding out hope for Thunderbolts.
I was going to skip it, and you've vindicated me. The only interesting recent super hero movie was the new 'Joker: Folie a Deux', and that's because it was human. I only watched it because the Public hated it.
