In the near future of Companion, everyone who is young and beautiful is having sex with humanoid iPhones programmed to love them unconditionally. Their bright, adoring eyes turn white when they’re told to sleep. They wake back up with a word from their beloved, a human who has purchased them a robot company.
Companion is a dark sci-fi fable with a few genuine surprises written and directed by Drew Hancock. There's no reason to spoil anything about this dark little romp, but it does star Jack Quaid and Sophie Thatcher. Quaid is Josh, an affable dweeb, and Thatcher is his clingy girlfriend, Iris. The pair join other friends for a weekend getaway at a lake house, and one of those guests is the very funny Harvey Guillén. Josh is a nice guy, or is he? Irisi is fragile, or is she? Thatcher is an actor with a deceptively delicate smile.
