There's only one classic shark movie, and it's not 1999's Deep Blue Sea. But director Renny Harlin's splashy man-eater thriller has something Spielberg's Jaws doesn't—three hyperintelligent genetically engineered sharks who want revenge on the researchers who bred them in an underwater facility.
This is excellent late-night cable TV stuff featuring a cast of top-notch ‘90s character actors, including Stellan Skarsgård, Michael Rapaport, and heroic heartthrob Thomas Jane. Does LL Cool J almost steal the movie as a Bible-quoting cook? Almost. Saffron Burrows plays a scientist who has never read Frankenstein. As a wealthy investor, Samuel L. Jackson gives one of the greatest inspirational speeches in B-movie history. The CGI is dated, but the hunt is harrowing: the toothy murder fish stalk their human captors in waist-high water and bite off their limbs. They must be stopped before they escape into the ocean and birth a master race of super sharks!
