Director John Landis's frat boy comedy Animal House once defined Hollywood comedy: the crudeness, the smugness, the shallowness—the weak-chinned machismo.
And then, in 2016, celebrated indie director Richard Linklater made his version of Animal House; only his horny, hard-partying hangout movie has a heart. Set in a small Texas college in 1980, Everybody Wants Some!! follows the school baseball team—a mix of freshman and upper-class rascals—as they spend the last few days of summer looking to hook up. These boys are all boors but lovable. Their beer-fueled quest introduces them to disco and punk. My favorite part? When the jocks meet the theater kids.
The movie features a cast of up-and-coming young guns, including future Superman Tyler Hoechlin (his mustache is excellent) and Glen Powell, who comes off as a brainier, more rouge-ish Matthew McConaughey. Is this as good as Linklater's smart slice-of-stoner-life Dazed & Confused? Naw.
You can’t find those truck inner tubes anymore, which is a shame because they are the best things to swim in. The last one I had cost $40.
I’ll give this a watch.
