I'm not the biggest fan of drug humor. I'm not opposed to drugs, but you do you. But scenes where characters puff/dose/snort are almost always predictable—except for this one trip in the subversive anti-bromance comedy Friendship, when star Tim Robinson licks a psychedelic toad in the backroom of a cellphone store.
Written and directed by Andrew DeYoung with considerable restraint, Friendship is about a suburban dad who becomes infatuated/obsessed with his friendly, handsome new neighbor, a weatherman played by Paul Rudd.
Robinson is the dad, and his usual small-screen sketch comedy schtick translates surprisingly well to the big screen. He is hilarious as a needy, late Millennial beta cuck with intense anger issues who's being eaten alive by his insecurities. He’s toxic, like the toad. I thought I would get tired of the character at first, but I didn't. And yet, I wanted Friendship to be more unhinged; more bizarre.
