The best scene in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire comes early: nontraditional leading man Dan Stevens is a swashbuckling, Hawaiian-shirt-wearing veterinarian who pulls a giant tooth. After that, this creature feature delivers nothing but CGI monster fights intercut with humans staring up in awe and horror. One day, soon, AI will be able to extrude such eager-to-please spectacles.
This is the fifth movie in a franchise about the love/hate relationship between a radioactive lizard and a giant gorilla. Nothing makes sense, of course, but Kong gets a robot hand. That's not nothing. Who needs a plot when there's a lost kingdom inside a lost kingdom? And Jurassic Park-sized ice dragons? And an evil great ape! There are so many gargantuan beasts, and it’s surprising there are any cities left. What's the worst part? The primitives? Baby Kong? Brian Tyree Henry's comedic zingers? Yes, but it's nice to see Mothra.
