The conceit at the center of coming-of-age comedy My Old Ass is revealed without fanfare or explanation: 18-year-old Elliott is visited by her future 39-year-old self during a 'shroom trip. They continue communicating via text for the rest of this funny, unironically romantic movie.
They what? How? Shhhh. Doesn't matter.
Maisy Stella stars as young Elliot, a queer teen enjoying her last summer before her first year of college in the big city. Stella carries the movie. She is an agile actor; her character is open-hearted and frustrating, selfish and goofy. Director Megan Park's second feature is touching and tart, like the cranberry farm Elliott’s family owns.
As older Elliot, Aubrey Plaza doesn't work too hard, and she doesn't have to: Plaza is usually comedic relief, and while she's still sassy in My Old Ass, she gets to punch the audience, as elder millennials put it, right in the feels.
I love this movie SO much. I wrote about it today as well. Glad that others are seeing it.
I feel special that I have seen every film in this post. Amazing reviews - I take it you liked My Old Ass then? ☺️
