Parker Posey is a fox; by that, I mean she's sly, clever, and a prankster.
As Mary in the very 90s comedy Party Girl, Posey is a downtown NYC fashionista with mean girl tendencies. Director Daisy von Scherler Mayers 'ode to Gen X club kids—whatever—is more than just boys and girls behaving badly. It's a feminist creation myth: a shallow goodtime gal transforms into a librarian with glasses. The politics of Party Girl do not date. The energy is fresh. This indie is diverse and queer-friendly, save for a spare, if ironic, slur. Posey's character falls in love with a handsome Middle Eastern street vendor who is sensitive and thoughtful. A baby-faed Liev Schreiber is a sleazy bartender and Sasha Von Scherler is Judy, Mary's strong-willed godmother, her only living family. The only legacy sequel I want is Party Girl 2. Does she grow up to be Judy?
Watched this for the first time recently and loved it. This sums it up very well.
