My favorite '80s teen comedy, Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion, came out in 1997. It is a goofy, relatively angst-free romp about the power of platonic love.
Oscar-winner Mira Sorvino and sitcom star Lisa Kudrow play Romy and Michelle, two BFFs struggling in L.A. and pushing thirty who concoct a ridiculous lie to impress their classmates back in Tucson. It's too bad this cult comedy wasn't a massive hit; there should have been at least a half-dozen sequels.
Sorvino's Romy is a relatable optimist with a quirky Valley Girl baritone, and Kudrow, as Michele, proves that she was the funniest Friends cast member. Janeane Garofalo is at her Janeane Garofalo-est as a chain-smoking malcontent with a case of unrequited love. The heroes of this playful look at post-adolescent self-acceptance are the awkward sweethearts oblivious to their social status until it's rubbed in their faces by prom kings and queens.
