Snake Eyes: A GI Joe Origins is the third big-budget movie based on a line of action figures that spawned a legendary 80s cartoon TV series.
None of these live-action adaptations ever captured the comic book charms of real American heroes fighting Cobra, a terrorist organization run entirely by theatre kids. But Snake Eyes surprises—it's a decent ninja movie that delivers the three Ks: karate, katana swords, and killing, lots of killing. Robert Schwentke directs with confidence, but punches are pulled. This is a toy company's IP, after all.
What makes Snake Eyes an entertaining watch is Henry Golding as the title character, a graceful, charismatic warrior hunting down the man who murdered his father. Andrew Koji joins Golding as soulful super-assassin Storm Shadow. A magical stone figures into the plot (yawn!). Thankfully, there are giant anacondas. Snake Eyes is at its best when it's two-friends-against-twenty and no Joes.
