Cate Blanchett stars as an elegant weasel in director Todd Field’s chilly arthouse drama about the fall of a celebrated genius. In Tár, the rarefied world of classical music is revealed to be no different from any stuffy moribund institution populated by suck-ups, has-beens, and predators.
As Lydia Tár, the brilliant and passionate conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic, Blanchett demonstrates, again, why she is one of the best. Her Tár is a magnificent, Athena-like creation—pure lightening—until the past catches up to her, and she slowly melts back into her true form, a mere mortal, grasping and testy.
The cast is there to support Blanchett, but Noémie Merlant, as Tar’s long-suffering assistant, is especially cracking as a worthy adversary. The movie is monotonous, occasionally dream-like, and the ending delivers a surprise punchline. It’s funny, but uncomfortably so. Tár deserves what she gets, but what should gifted scumbags do with their talent?
I have to watch it. Haven’t seen it. I need movie recommendations ALL the time.
This is why I've missed your stuff.
