The America in Tobe Hooper’s horror classic, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, is a falling-down house that a family of murderous cannibal rednecks—all men—calls home. Be careful in God’s country, young people, because human sacrifice is the true national pastime.
Marilyn Burns sizzles as Sally, our hero, an everywoman who survives a quick trip to hell. Real-life serial killer Ed Gein inspired Hooper, but his movie monster is original: Leatherface is the granddaddy of indestructible cinematic killing machines, a hulk made of meat.
The final moment of the movie is breathtaking: Leatherface, triumphant, dancing with his chainsaw in the golden Texas sunlight right before a violent cut to black. He is the angel of death. One day, he will come for you. There’s no fighting it. You can try, but you may as well punch thunder. He can be slowed, you can escape, but in the end, Leatherface always wins.
