It's the only good prequel. David Lynch's Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me tells the story of Laura Palmer, the troubled teenager whose murder was the focus of Lynch's Twin Peaks, the influential early '90s TV crime drama that brought cinematic quality and surrealism to prime-time for two short seasons.
Fire Walk With Me hit theaters unceremoniously in 1992. The movie is many things: a meditation on evil, a human sacrifice, a slice of moldy cherry pie. This broken world is a nightmare inside a nightmare. A fun, fan-friendly reunion? Not so much.
As Palmer, Sheryl Lee gives a shattering performance as a wounded child slowly being pulled apart. Ray Wise plays Palmer's father, a terrifying suburban monster. This is one of Lynch's most emotionally raw movies, a haunting work—beautiful, hallucinatory, and grotesque.
"Who killed Laura Palmer?" That's not the question. Lynch begs you to mourn the victim instead.
