My debut memoir, 'Theatre Kids,' is officially out today. Happy Pub Day to me.
You can order it at your local bookstore or via the Internet.
To those of you who have already pre-ordered, thank you. Please consider mentioning the book on social media—yes, I know the platforms are cursed, but it would help. A book pic on IG? A witty shout-out on Elon’s Bullhorn of Misery? A four-hour video essay on YouTube? While you're online, please throw me a review on Amazon.
I started this newsletter as a post-book project—I wanted something to do after turning in the first draft of Theatre Kids. I didn’t want my writing muscles to atrophy, so I started grinding out short reviews of movies and longer essays. I love movies. I also thought I’d experiment with Substack because why not? Over the past few months, my subscribers have grown, and I’ve started to get to know readers, which is nice. If you like my movie writing, I think you’ll like my book. It’s a funny/sad love letter to misfits, weirdos, and runaways making experimental art on their terms in post-911/pre-iPhone NYC. It’s a very Gen X book, too—the concept of “selling out” often comes up. There are also subplots about addiction, and family, and suboptimal romantic choices.
Anyway, here’s an image of me as The Phantom of the Opera, a.k.a. The Closet Thing The American Musical Theatre Has To Batman.
Well done, John! I can't wait to read your book. Your newsletter really inspires me and I sincerely hope you keep it going.
Congratulations.
