BSD Is one of my all time favorites. I love how Coppola incorporates so many cinematic tricks but never looses sight of the narrative. I'm even prepared to defend the much maligned casting of Keanu Reeves.
It's a great film for all the reasons you say, and imo the other great Coppola adaptation is You're a Big Boy Now which is rich in archetypal truths (and has Karen Black in it).

Mel Brooks used the Coppola version as the jumping off point for his "Dracula" parody "Dead And Loving It."
