My favorite special effect in Sinners is the first time we meet the Smokestack Twins, both played by Michael B. Jordan, an actor with bottomless charm and grit. They pass a cigarette back and forth while leaning against a jalopy, two dangerous men with a plan.
Director Ryan Coogler's Sinners is a lusty, Jim Crow-era fright night penny dreadful about Irish vampires crashing a party. Coogler honors the genre: there's plenty of blood. There's also step dancing and shootouts. And oral sex. He has much to say about systemic oppression and the healing power of the blues, but there are no lectures.
The movie stomps and hollers because the characters sweat and love. The cast burns with life, including Oluwunmi Mosaku, Miles Caton, and Delroy Lindo. The seductive bloodsuckers wonder: why can't we all just get along? The music will levitate you. There’s one moral: Only family can defeat evil.

I thought Sinners was pretty good but better than Adaptation and The Social Network? Surely not!
