The Crow didn't need to be remade, and yet it was. The 1994 comic book adaptation is best known as a real-life tragedy: its star, Brandon Lee, son of icon Bruce, was accidentally killed on set during a gun stunt gone wrong. It's an R-rated, black leather fairy tale revenge fantasy about a sexy ninja clown brought back from the dead to avenge the murder of the love of his life.
The new version lacks the visual flair of the original; there's no real sense of time or place. It's not goth enough—where are the tombstones? The roses? The cast seems bored, although FKA Twigs tries to twinkle as the sacrificial damsel. Bill Skarsgard is a good actor, served poorly by director Rupert Sanders, who confuses The Crow with The Matrix. I didn't hate it: the violence is gruesome but occasionally creative. The needle drops are moody and propulsive.

And Now A Word From Our Sponsor: ‘Theatre Kids’ By John DeVore
My memoir, Theatre Kids, is three months old today. Happy birthday, book! Here's what critics have said:
“A wry and boisterous account… Electric prose elevates this homage to an enduring art form.” ― Publishers Weekly
"This moving memoir recounts DeVore’s life-changing experience having a bit part in a tiny, four-hour production adaptation of William Faulkner’s novel “As I Lay Dying” as he struggled with addiction and grief. The cast and crew were scrappy but passionate as they tried to bring their vision to life in a windowless theater in Brooklyn in post-9/11 New York." ― NY Post
"A most excellent and entertaining read... This “true, true tale of off-off Broadway” is for anyone who has ever found themselves unable to resist the call of the stage." ― Strong Words
