Jesus doesn't save a soul in director Demián Rugna's Spanish-language demonic shocker When Evil Lurks. Rugna's world is dying, a godless dystopia where Lucifer's evil spreads like a virus, infecting children and animals first. Then, everyone you love.
The old exorcist tricks don't work, either.
The movie is about two brothers who don't follow the rules. They discover a nearby "rotten"—short-hand for a possessed person—and then proceed to do all the wrong things. Rottens are disgusting—mucho pus.
What comes next is a genuinely horrifying downward spiral. When Evil Lurks is wholly original, even as it boldly pilfers body parts from other horror genres, including zombie movies and plague nightmares like The Stand.
The hermanos, Ezequiel Rodríguez and Demián Salomón, are appropriately harried and surprisingly sympathetic, considering they unleashed hell. Silvina Sabater steals her scenes as a no-nonsense Satan slayer. When Evil Lurks is disgusting and haunting, the scares are ruthless.
