It began as a stage-play called Idioglossia first staged at the George St Playhouse in New Brunswick NJ (Rutgers land). Starred Joel Higgins (the dad in the 80s sitcom Silver Spoons)

VERY interesting -- I wonder if the play was Miracle Worker-esque. It's autobiographical!

I'm interested in the play but the screenplay is not good

Many of the films where the lead characters are "disabled" in some way that you mentioned won Oscars. But clearly many haven't aged well...
