So when I was 20 and this movie came out, I LOVED it. I marveled at Gwyneth’s voice and didn’t notice the incestuous interactions with Huey. I really just liked the music and had a crush on the downtrodden cab driver (Felicity!).
I found this review literally because in 2026 I just rewatched this show and…what the fuck? I need a support group after watching this movie. Why did Reggie do that for Todd??? Todd was a selfish adolescent spoiled idiot! Whose fault was it that he chose a suburban boring life and raised children who don’t like him enough to say hello when he comes home? Where is his personal responsibility??? I just kept wishing Reggie would ditch his ass. I mean even when he taught him to drive, he verbally abused him and forced him to play chicken with a semi. When he is laughing on the ground after putting them in a life threatening situation, then he laughs again after Reggie chooses suicide by police over going back to prison. Ugh. Then I can’t believe Candy even takes him back. I’d divorce that loose cannon asap before he gets you and the kids caught up in some nonsense in his quest for the road less traveled. Ew. Also the homophobia, a given in any ‘90s movie but spilled over I guess. When Huey teases the guy and his manager about being gay and then they attack him on stage. Jesus. I can’t.
Anyway, thank you for your support as I pick up the pieces of who I thought I was at 20 years old, and who I am at 45, and try to make a tiny bit of sense of life, despite the existence of Duets.
It's so cringe to hear the lyrics of the song while realizing Pepper Pots and Huey are playing daughter and Dad. "This is not a one night stand".
