Mercifully short reviews !? My kind of man. As for new Superman . Ok ok you got me. I’ll go . I’m forever the first one. Reeves and Director Dick Donner (left due to “differences”. He was one of my older sis boyfriends. I had a little girl crush. Handsome, deep voice, great hair, saddle shoes. He was a Superman to me .
I follow a few handfuls of Substack writers. Discovered you this morn. Film reviews ! I’m a product of cinema and broadway family . Bhills born /raised. I live far away . You can take the kid outta ….
Am I the only one who found "Superman" a little hokey? And kind of dumb?
Don't get me wrong, it's done well (James Gunn knows how to make a comic book movie) but feels just...un-Super? Maybe it just speaks to the aw shucks Clark Kent/Superman character in our modern cynical age, but I was actually just a little meh about it.
Superman is hokey though. He’s basically a kind of Santa Claus character and his inner turmoil is wanting to be human but being burdened with godhood. Can you imagine if I had Superman’s powers? KNEEL BEFORE DEVORE
You're not wrong. But take another DC character "Dr. Manhattan" for instance. He actually practically IS God, but he struggles with having to care for a society, and he's trying to find ways to connect. They made a GREAT story about him in the Watchman reboot. In today's modern cynical age, that's more of a resonant storyline than the '50s-ish naive "Do Good for the sake of it" Clark Kent boy scout story. A more interesting take on Superman was the "Red Son" storyline where he lands in USSR instead of the US and how that changed his character and how we view Superman. This film was just more of the same old same old. Its just George Reeves again.

welcome!
Great White Way calling your voice!
The Great White Way is calling your voice
I enjoyed reading this essay, and it reinforced my sense that I wish we were friends irl. Para-social affection and Substack support will have to do!
A well-worded summary with which I largely concur. :)
Hi Simon!
Hi John! Sorry I’ve not frequented your neck of the woods in a while. I hope all is well with you. :)
Yessir. I caught a bit of a live stream with you and a couple of other movie fans. Good stuff!
Thank you very much. That’s immensely encouraging as I was concerned about how I’d come across. :)
I like your style. My recent movie reviews are even shorter.
